My reflection on dance...(still a work in progress..)

I enjoyed ballet class last night because I had learned that when it becomes less about me, building my glory and striving to be The best in class (and I stop comparing myself to others), suddenly there is freedom, joy and smiles in my offering! Yeah the Lord has given me a talent and passion to dance therefore this is an offering of my body, soul, spirit and talent to my Giver. A dance is a presentation - I am presenting myself before the Lord, the King of kings, Lord of lords, the Holy and Anointed One!

The Lord is also teaching me to serve. To serve my housemates (emptying the rubbish bins when it is not my turn, cleaning up after others etc). It has been an area where I have often felt resentful but the Lord is teaching me to serve with a gracious heart. As a dancer, I am called to serve other dancers and the audience. There is no comparison or unnecessary competition in servanthood. A servant thinks about others and a servant serves without complaining because they do what they are called to do, to serve!

If dance is about service unto others and presenting myself before the Holy One, my Father, then I want to present a gift that is pure, holy, strong, passionate and with meaning. But I pondered about the dance pieces that portray sadness, suffering and brokenness, what will I do... I think I will express it through dance and remembering the hope that we have in Christ.

I believe that dance is not a show of sexual lust, sensuality of the flesh, sexual power and seduction, darkness or despair beyond repair. Sadly this is the type of dance that our generation is bombarded by (MTVs and 'So you think you can dance' show). I believe we are called to be the image bearers of Christ and to be the sons and daughters of God, the most High King. Christ is humble, yet confident but not of the flesh, He is loving, gracious, compassionate, merciful, STRONG!, Powerful!, wonderful. He is hope and the author of salvation!

So here it is...humility...modesty...confidence...beauty...grace...freedom...TRUTH!!...

Therefore my dance offering as a child of God must carry the message of the cross and reflect the image of Christ. My work in dance shall come from the abundance of my heart out of intimacy with Christ and is a reflection of my Father, the Creator of heaven and earth, whom all things came to be.

My work has got to be creative, redemptive and restorative! Because that is WHO the Father is and the work He has called us to do, as He continues to restore the earth and humanity!! Amen!
